L.Alien Presents: Molly Ash
**Line of work / Job title(s) (paid or unpaid) :
Bookseller/Freelance Writer
**Where are you from and what brought you to L.A.?
I’m from Seattle! 25 years of non-stop rain made the decision to move to sunny L.A. a pretty easy one.
How has being in L.A. changed your life?
I think I’m a lot more motivated to do things here than I was back home, because everyone I’m surrounded by in L.A. is so driven and it’s contagious.
What kind of obstacles were you faced with during your move to L.A.?
$$$$$$$
What is/are your favorite thing(s) about living in L.A.?
The weather, the food scene, the bookstores, vintage clothing stores, the fact that anytime I need something there is definitely a store within 10 miles from me that sells it, no matter how obscure the item. I also love the traffic! So fun.
What thing(s) did you do this week to bring you closer to where you want to be?
I try to write something or edit something I’ve written every single day. I’ve also been applying for a bunch of jobs this week, so that’s exciting.
What is the most significant goal you had before you got here that you’ve achieved?
I wanted to work in the book industry and I am lucky to get to be able to do that. Now it’s just a matter of moving around within the industry and finding the perfect position for myself.
What is the most significant goal you had before you got here that you are still working toward?
Writing television! I mean, I write television all the time, but to actually get paid for it… That’d be the dream.
What do you love that you struggle to find time for?
These days, everything. I work so much that I rarely have days off. When I do, they are very precious to me and I put a lot of pressure on myself to enjoy them, but most of the time I’m too tired to do much of anything once my day off rolls around.
What do you do for fun?
Read, cuddle my dog, kiss my boyfriend, listen to true crime podcasts/watch true crime, write, cook, paint, go to stand-up comedy shows.
Any words of wisdom for others out there who may be thinking about moving to L.A. to pursue their dreams?
Make sure you have a lot of money saved up. Shoot for the stars, but understand that your dreams are going to change over the years and you have to be willing to adjust your goals. Some things take a really long time to achieve, but as long as you’re always working towards something that’s all that matters.
Do you have any projects, shows, performances, or events coming up that we should know about?
Always! I produce a comedy show called The Best Medicine Show that I took a little hiatus from but I am hoping to get it up and running again soon. I also host an event called Unhealthy Poetry at Book Soup. Soon, I will be getting my website mollylikesbooks.com up and running and it will be a place where anyone in need of a book recommendation can go and look. I’m really looking forward to that coming together.
